Which Alaska counties have no zoning?

Alaska has 13 county-equivalents without countywide zoning and 17 with zoning.48 The no-countywide-zoning group begins with Kenai Peninsula Borough, Bethel Census Area, Dillingham Census Area, Nome Census Area, Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, Lake and Peninsula Borough, Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Hoonah-Angoon Census Area.4 Compare the no-zoning list with the no-building-codes and no-zoning list: 11 county-equivalents have neither a residential building permit requirement nor countywide zoning.9

Alaska municipal planning, platting and land-use powers depend on the type of borough or city, and actual zoning districts and permitted uses are local.15 Before choosing a parcel, ask the borough or city planning office about the proposed dwelling and subdivision approval; where DNR is the platting authority, a plat must be approved before recording and legal access must be provided to all lots.1617
